ADA — The Ohio Northern baseball team swept a pair of close games by scores of 5-4 (10 inn.) and 3-2 in a doubleheader against Marian (Ind.) at Wander Field Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears improve to 8-3 on the season, while NAIA school Marian drops to 2-8 overall.
ONU used a walk-off single by freshman Josh Murphy in the opener and a 3-for-3 performance by senior Adam Yunker in the nightcap en route to its victories.
In Game 1, ONU needed late-game heroics to pull off the win.
Northern was down 4-3 in the bottom of the tenth when sophomore Cory Martin singled and advanced to second on a balk.
After sophomore Devin Kisor entered as a pinch runner, he advanced to third on a groundout.
Now with two outs, junior Chad Coward singled in Kisor to tie the game at 4-4.
Adam Yunker reached on an error before Murphy hit a walk-off single, driving in Coward to win the game 5-4.
Junior Eric Yunker also went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored for ONU.
Sophomore Austin Price tossed 7.1 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) and striking out five.
Fellow sophomore Shane Parks improved to 2-0, throwing 2.2 innings, allowing one hit, one unearned run and fanning three batters. Parks is yet to allow an earned run in 12.0 innings this season.
In the second game, ONU utilized a solid performance by junior Justin Good.
Good (2-1) went 6.0 innings, allowing two runs and six hits, while adding four strikeouts.
Junior Ryan Damman struck out the side in the seventh to pick up his first save of the season.
After the Knights took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, ONU tied the game with a pair of runs on an RBI single by Murphy to knock in Adam Yunker, and RBI groundout by sophomore Kevin Obarski to plate Murphy.
In the fifth, Adam Yunker led off with a single and eventually advanced to third on a throwing error. Eric Yunker drove in his brother with a sharp single to left center, giving the Polar Bears a 3-2 lead it never relinquished.
ONU will return to action Wednesday, when it hosts Bluffton at Wander Field at 4 p.m.
