Men’s Tennis Team Beats ONU to Improve to 22-0

NORTH RIDGEVILLE, OHIO --  The Baldwin-Wallace College men's tennis team tied a school record for wins in a season at 22 and defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University, 7-2, today (Saturday, April 21, 2012) in an OAC showdown of previously undefeated teams at the North Ridge Racquet Club in North Ridgeville. The match was moved from Berea to North Ridgeville and from outdoors to indoors due to inclement weather conditions.

With its victory, the Yellow Jackets improved to 22-0 overall and 7-0 in the OAC while ONU dropped to 8-5 overall and 6-1 in the OAC. The 22 wins ties the record for wins in a season when B-W also finished 22-0 in 2004. To date, B-W has outscored its opponents this season, 184-14, with 13 shutouts, including six against its seven OAC opponents. The victory also was the 407th for Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Brian Rector.

B-W gained an early 2-1 lead after the doubles competition and won five of the six singles matches to stretch its winning ways.

In singles play, junior All-OAC standout Joe Horvath (North Royalton) won 6-1 and 6-0 at No.2 to improve to 23-2 this season and 68-8 during his career and is ranked in a tie for eighth all-time in singles victories. In addition, freshman Kyle Patterson (Wooster/ Triway) won 6-2 and 6-2 at No.3, senior Alexandre Bourdiaux (Paris, FRANCE) won 6-0 and 6-4 at No.4, junior Alex Kearney (North Olmsted) won 6-3, 3-6 and 1-0 (10-7) at No.5 and junior No.6 player Tyler Beaton (Bemus Point, N.Y./ Maple Grove) won 6-3 and 6-0. This season, Patterson is now 22-3, Bourdiaux is 19-0, Kearney is 20-4 and Beaton is 15-1.

In doubles action, the number one tandem of senior 3-time All-OAC and 2-time Acadmic All-OAC standout Alex Trzeciak (Avon Lake) and Bourdiaux won by an 8-4 score and the No.3 team of Patterson and senior Taylor Long (Ashland/ Senior) won by an 8-4 score. With their victory at No.1 doubles, Trzeciak and Bourdiaux are now 17-1 this season and Trzeciak improved his career doubles slate to 78-24.

B-W ends the final week of the regular season when it travels to University Heights on Tuesday, April 24 to play an OAC match against Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University at 3:30 p.m. and then at home on Saturday, April 28 versus OAC-rival Marietta College in the second match of a women's and men's doubleheader on the Collins Courts at 1:00 p.m. The Yellow Jacket women play Marietta at 11:00 a.m.

The 2012 OAC Tournament begins with a men's first round match in Berea against a yet to be determined opponent at 3:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, May 2, prior to B-W's first round OAC Tournament match in Berea, the College is going to recognize Coach Rector for his 400th career victory. He is the winningest men's tennis coach in OAC and Ohio collegiate history.
